VineyardRandy Phillips, owner and winemaker at Cave Ridge, incorporates many years of winemaking experience into handcrafting small quantities of high quality wines. He believes that the best wines come from the best vineyards. This is why you are likely to find Randy spending most of his time in the vineyard instead of the wine cellar.

Randy takes no short cuts in the winemaking process. Each vine needs to be touched at least six times during the year to ensure the highest quality grapes at harvest. Grapes that don’t meet his standards are sold or dropped on the ground. Because of Randy's philosophy on winemaking, Cave Ridge promotes a sustainable agricultural approach. Through his plan, Cave Ridge is able to recycle virtually everything from the vineyard not used for production. With composting, these recycled parts are added back to the soil as a natural fertilizer; providing precious nutrients. This process allows Cave Ridge the choice of not using chemical fertilizers on its crop, which Randy believes improves the overall product.

Harvest is a special time at Cave Ridge. Grapes are picked by hand and inspected twice before being crushed and gently pressed to produce wines that reflect the character of the fruit. Randy believes Virginia is rapidly becoming a premier wine producing region because most of the vineyards in the region are focused on quality rather than quantity, and Virginia winemakers better understand the growing conditions and grape varieties that produce the best wines.

The end result is quality wines that can be enjoyed with friends and family.
